Ten tracks we won’t stop playing this week

Don’t worry even though the title might be slightly similar to the weekly thread of Digital Spy we guarantee you we’re here to offer you plenty of tracks which we recently discovered and simply can’t get enough of. So get ready for a mixture Old School, Pop, K-Pop and lots of Girl Power.

A*M*E – Play The Game Boy (November 5)

South East Londoner Amy Kabba, is only 17 years old but under her artist name A*M*E she’s bound to become a household name in the UK music industry. As one of the few who can call Gary Barlow ‘Uncle G’ this young lady has got some huge hit potential ready with the infectious pop track ‘Play The Game Boy’. The latter is a mixture of fluent pop sounds, not that dissimilar of the K-Pop wave which is slowly but surely making its entrance in Europe. The video is awesome as well. Our favourite line? ”If you wanna take a shot, better show me what you got” which shows off A*M*E’s East London accent.

Justin Bieber – Beauty & A Beat Ft Nicki Minaj (November 12)

We are really really really starting to like Canadian superstar Justin Bieber. The teen idol has massively stepped up with his latest album ‘Believe’. We have kinda gotten lost in the count in which single this is (third we think) but really it’s by far its best single to date. Joining forces with Barb Nicki Minaj, ‘Beauty and a Beat’ is an addictive pop track. It’s out through the album already, the single version is out November 12.

4Minute – Volume Up / Love Tension (Out Now)

4Minute are the in 2009 formed South Korean girl group consisting of five members. With a huge fan base in the Asia, the girls can be considered as the Eastern equivalent of Girls Aloud and one of the leading groups for the K-Pop wave. We’re completely hooked on two of their brilliant tracks called ‘Volume Up’ and ‘Love Tension’. Both are out via the new mini LP ‘Volume Up’. Girl Power’s always at its best when there’s five!

Ke$ha – Die Young (November 26)

Personality wise we’re not sure we’re crazy about Ke$ha but blimey there’s no denying this girl makes some pretty awesome party music. ‘Die Young’ is therefore no exception. The single is the predecessor for the the singer songwriter’s second album which is out in December. With lyric videos being a common thing these days, Ke$ha is truly stepping it up a notch making an appearance and quite literally changing the concept once again. The changes in fact are so great that we wouldn’t mind having it as the actual video for the song. Killer-anthem!

Labrinth – Underneath Your Beautiful Ft. Emeli Sande (Out now)

To be fairly honest, upon hearing Labrinth would release his next single with Olympic Games ambassador Emeli Sande, were really were concerned about the overexposure of the latter in the last few months. But we should have known there was nothing to worry about. Sande in fact stays rather in the background while Labrinth really carries this beautiful ballad on his shoulders. It’s all Christmassy and gooey like a proper Chocolate Fudge Pudding. So no wonder, the duo took the number 1 in the UK charts this week. Go get it!

Bright Light Bright Light – Feel It ft. Mykal Kilgore (out Now)

Rod Thomas aka Bright Light Bright Light is actually our biggest revelation in 2012 with ‘Waiting For This Feeling’ still being heavily rotated on our Ipod. The successor ‘s track ‘Feel It’ continues where ‘Waiting For This Feeling’ finished. It’s an incredible old school track with smooth vocals, bombarding it once again to one of our ultimate favourites. Check out the video too as it’s AWESOME!

Christophe Willem – Starlight (French version out now)

From one amazing performer to another. French artist/singer songwriter Christophe Willem shot to fame a few years ago after winning the French talent show ‘Nouvelle Star’. Since he’s appeared in musicals and mainly released albums, the latest one being Prismophonic (2011). Taken from that album, Starlite, has now been translated and given a Freemasons remix, sampling a little bit of Chaka Khan. The result is simply Lush. Currently only the French version is out, but we’re hoping the English cut isn’t far off.

Girls Aloud – Something New (November 18)

So we talked about the Asian equivalent of Girls Aloud but we would forget our favourite fivesome are also back together and presented they’d tour again early 2013. Not only that though, in November Girls Aloud are celebrating their 10th anniversary with a brand new Greatest hits album and the new single ‘Something New’ which serves as the BBC’s Children in Need Charity single. As with Ke$ha Girls Aloud are turning the lyric video in a proper music video, which suits the already amazing track beautifully. We are so buying this!

Little Mix – DNA (November 12)

Plenty of Girl Power today so what a better way to end it all off with the latest addition of promising girl bands. Yes their proper debut single ‘Wings’ got us seriously excited so when we heard ‘DNA’ we were once again blown away. The Little muffins of Tulisa, have come a far way since they won the X Factor nearly a year ago, and their produces so far are showing they are in it for the long run. Clearly inspired by the Katy Perry performance during Halloween week last year, ‘DNA’ is much darker than its predecessor but also a huge signature to the Little Mix stamp. Amazing!

New Emeli Sandé – My Kind of Love Official Video

Scottish singer songwriter Emeli Sandé has announced details for the release of her fourth single. ”My Kind of Love” will be released as the fourth cut from her hugely successful debut album ”Our version of Events” on May 28.

It’s the first ballad to be released from the album and showcases the haunting vocals of the singer. As announcing details about the single, the singer has also revealed the video for the track, explaining the reason and concept behind it:

“During my time studying medicine, I found it hard to write, but one of the things that inspired me were the patients and the interaction that they had with their loved ones during their time of illness. When people arrived at the hospital, money and status became irrelevant and only health mattered, which sparked an honesty between people which was amazing. This interaction, declaration of support and love, was the inspiration for “My Kind Of Love” and something I wanted to try and portray in this video…”

Enjoy the video!

”My Kind of Love” the single will be out on May 28. The platinum selling debut album ”Our Version of Events” can be bought via iTunes Amazon or any other record store.

The Album Battle: Sinead O’Connor vs Mel C vs Emeli Sande

It’s a tripple bill tonight with three singer songwriters, each of them spanning their own generation from the 80ies to the 00′ies, battling it out against eachother in our monthly Album battle review: Sinead O’Connor latest offering ‘How About I Be Me (And You Be You?) takes on Melanie C’s ‘The Sea’ and Emeli Sande’s ‘Our Version of Events’ . Who will take the crown!

Sinead O’Connor – How About I be Me (And You Be You?)

80ies pop icon Sinead O’Connor returns with a new album ‘How About I Be Me and You Be You’ to reflect on personal experiences such as getting married, have children, and personal fears and relationship situations.

The album opens with the ethnic ‘’4th & Vine’’ which deals with Sinead talking about her emotions of going to church and getting wed. It’s a sublime opening track, with a very Middle Eastern influence to it. The album is a typical Sinead O’Connor album, very heartfelt, personal songs, who aren’t always as radio-friendly, the best example for this is probably the song ‘’Queen of Denmark’’ which is a rant against her lover and the world. There’s some harsh language used, which radio stations would probably not agree to play, it’s a great song which highlight’s the controversial person Sinead is which makes the track stand out on the album.  The new single ‘’The Wolf Is Getting Married’’ is without a doubt the most radio friendly of the bunch, and a very good lead way to the album. The same counts for ‘’I Had a Baby’’ which is lyrically so strong and features baby sounds making it sound sweet and heartfelt.

The 11 tracks on the album showcases what a brilliant songwriter Sinead is and how we should welcome her back with open arms in the industry but we couldn’t help but with wondering how the absence of the ethno-inspired title track ‘How About I Be Me and You Be You’ could be justified. The track, which was released as an individual single last year, clearly didn’t make the cut.

Melanie C – The Sea

While her latest album, ‘The Sea’ has been out for quite some time now, the talented singer songwriter, known as Sporty Spice in a long distant past, is getting a lot of coverage these days on television and radio since she’s touring the UK at the moment, so what a perfect moment to remind ourselves what a great singer Melanie C is, and what her latest album ‘The Sea’ has to offer.

Opener for the album is the title track ‘’The Sea’’ which is very much anthem and really sets the mood for what turns out to be an album, which Melanie herself described, as an experiment of different styles, hence why she chose to call it ‘The Sea’. There’s a variety of Mel’s on the album: From acoustic Mel on ‘’Let There Be Love’’ to Dancey Mel in ‘’Think about It’’. There is a return to her rock roots during the track ‘Stupid Game’ which she initially exposed on her first album ‘Northern Star’. And the pop tracks on the album, such as ‘’Burn’’ and ‘’Weak’’ which could have been written for the likes of Jessie J and Katy Perry. The appearance of ‘’Burn’’ on the album shows how current Mel is and how she literally blows a new generation away with her voice.  Point is the huge variety of styles showcases a remarkable voice which can handle any type of music.

As already mentioned some of the tracks are really anthemic, opener ‘’The Sea’’, ‘’Drown’’, and album-closer ‘’Enemy’’ are drenched with lots of drums, beats, guitars and just showcase again Mel’s voice and the emotions she brings to the surface.  The songs would perfectly fit into the musical genre and make you wonder why she’s not been offered to do a few seasons in the musical We Will Rock You.

Emeli Sande – Our Version of Events

Taking on Sinead and Mel C, is Scottish chanteuse Emeli Sande, who rose to fame last year when she released her 90ies inspired dance ballad ‘Heaven’, earning her the Brit Awards Critics Choice for 2012.

If you are expecting an album full of up-tempo dance inspired tracks a la ‘Heaven’ then we’ll have to warn you that ‘Our Version of Events’ may not be what you are looking for. Emeli’s without a doubt a lyrical wonder and a wonderful performer, but the track list for her new album consists mainly out of ballads. Not a bad thing of course, because there are some absolute gems on the album such as ‘’Mountains’’, ‘’Clown’’ ‘’Breaking the Law’’ and ‘’River’’ which really grab you where they need to. The album is however cleverly put together, in that sense that the few up-tempo tracks like ‘’Daddy’’ and the gospel inspired ‘’Maybe’’ and ‘’Next To Me’’ are being spread out so that the album doesn’t give you the chance to give up on the album.

Giving up on the album would be a shame, because there is some huge hit potential on there. Still we can’t deny we would like to have heard a few more tracks in the style of ‘Heaven’ appear on the album. Nevertheless it’s a very high quality debut album, with an exciting singer and songwriter who’s sure of a long future in the industry.

Our verdict:

All three albums stand out in their very own unique way and we would recommend buying them all three, but out of these three, we have opted to go for Mel C’s album, simply because it’s very different and experimental with different styles. But as we said all three of them are brilliant masterpieces in their own and definately worth a buy!

Mel C ”The Sea” is now available through iTunes.

Sinead O’Connor ”How about I Be Me and You be You?” is now available through iTunes.

Emeli Sande ”Our Version of Events” is now available through iTunes.

Ones to watch: Lil Wayne & Bruno Mars – Mirror

2011 has been a year of many collaborations where singers ask the favour of rappers to give their tracks a little push. And looks like this year it’s the other year arround. Rapper Lil Wayne is teaming up with Bruno Mars for ‘Mirrors’.

What a gem this is. In a short story, Wayne’s reflecting on his life and looking at the man he’s become in the mirror. And that’s the storyline for the video too. With a guest apperance of Bruno Mars, we’re seeing the rapper following in the footsteps of the likes of Professor Green and Emeli Sande, in order to give the song that little extra.

And it works, both Wayne’s and Bruno’s vocals are absolutely stunning and very haunting for the song. We like it a lot.

Lil Wayne’s ‘Mirror’ (feat. Bruno Mars) can be downloaded from the ‘Tha Carter IV’ album on Itunes.

One to Watch: Emeli Sande – Next To Me

It’s been quiet for a few weeks but we’re all back to deliver you a few reviews of songs that have caught my attention. While the internet is going crazy for the likes of Lana Del Reys album, I’ve got three great songs in mind which I’d like present to you all. You ready?

Let’s start off with one of the most promising British singer songwriters of the moment. During the last part of 2011,  Scottish Emeli Sande, started her road to fame when her debut single ‘Heaven’ and her collaboration on Professor Green’s ‘Read All About it’ hit the charts here in the UK. Two singles and one collaboration later, Emeli is getting herself ready to launch her very first album ‘Our Version of Events’ lifting the following jem as a warmer up.

‘Next To Me’ has this really great gospel vibe, which is noticable in the piano beat throughout the song. Again Emeli’s voice is absolutely stunning and suits the overal feeling really well. The song is a lot more upbeat as well in comparison to what she delivered in ‘Heaven’ and the inmensely underrated ‘Daddy’ and I am really hoping she continues to go into the direction of this uptempo stuff.

This jem will have you tapping your feet, want to get up and bust a little move, and by the second time you hear the chorus, you’ll be shouting it out as well.In case you want to join in. Here it is:

”next to me ooooh
next to me ooooh
next to me ooooh
you will find him, you’ll find him next to me”

It’s been a while since we’ve been so excited about a new artist and we can’t be more excited to hear that Emeli has also been nomited as the winner of the BRITS Critics Choice award 2012.

‘Next To Me’ is available to download via Itunes on the 12th February, while ‘Our Version of Events’ will be available on 13th of February and can be pre-ordered here: http://bit.ly/OurVersionOfEvents

And now time to enjoy… Emeli’s ‘Next To Me’
