ESC 2012: Jury votes in from Germany, Portugal, Finland and Italy

It’s been three weeks since Loreen won the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Many fans of the event are now in anticipation to find out the split votes between the juries and televoting, announced by the 42 participating broadcasters.

The system of 50% televoting and 50% juries was introduced in 2010, as an answer to claims of political voting in the past. First broadcasters to have released their jury votes are coming from Germany, Portugal and to a lesser extent Finland and Italy, who have both only given out the points of their juries in the final.

Stereo Killers – Eros and Apollo video

We’ve been waiting for the successor of ‘Ode To Bouncer’ for quite some time and it is finally here. Yes!

The people behind it, The Stereo Killers, are a virtual band that is composed of three animated cartoon characters, Cherry (Lead Singer), Goldie Foxx, and Dyna Mink. The real people behind the team are a Finnish, Danish and English combo and fantastic in making the electropop.

”Ode To Bouncer” became a huge hit originally in Denmark, and slowly surfaced in the European charts towards the end of the year. Now almost a year later after the release of their first single, the trio have the successor ready, ”Eros and Apollo” which refers to the Roman God of love and the Greek God of the sun.

Prepare yourself for a new uplifting dance track, very 9oies sounding heavily piano based track. What a cracker of a tune. Let’s hope the whole of Europe picks this up rather quickly and make it into a huge summer song.

ESC 2012 Review part 4 – Finland & Israel

Time for another two semi finalists in our Eurovision Review. Today we are heading to Finland who have decided to go Swedish this year and the only middle-Eastern country in the contest, Israel.

Finland: Pernilla Karlsson – Nar jag blundar

Finland had a rather complicated process in selecting their Eurovision entry this year. With a new preselection format, which kicked off with demos selected by webvoting, and juries involved, televised documentaries, eventually a final was held on February 25th to select the Finnish representative. Hoping to bring home the victory, for the second time behind Lordi (2006 winner), is Pernilla Karlsson who will sing ‘Nar Jag Blundar’ (”When I Close my Eyes”), a magical fairy tale ballad, sung in Swedish. We are so happy, Finland decided not to go the Icelandic way and change it into English as we really think this would have lost all its charm. With a bit more work on the style, this could have lots of potential and easily qualify for the big final. A true jem.

Israel: Izabo – Time

Early February it was announced that Israelian group Izabo would represent the three-time Eurovision winning country, with the song ‘Time’. After a rather sincere and ballady first half of the semi final, Izabo opens the more uptempo  part of the show with a song which verses is in English and the chorus in Hebrew. The band’s musical style is quite diverse, ranging from indie rock, disco and Middle Eastern music. And for the occassion they seem to have mixed all the mentioned styles together giving a rather weird result, especially as a first listen. Having said that, it is a grower and a happy chappy singalong song. Baring in mind, they are after two ballads, so they are in for a shot. Though this sounds for us a bit too much mixing and mashing, and comes across as a bit chaotic. Israel’s last win dates from 1998, when Dana International brought the contest back to Israelian soil.

Our verdict so far:

1 Romania

2 Finland

3 Belgium

4 Switzerland

5 Latvia

6 Israel

7 Iceland

8 Albania

9 Montenegro

10 Greece

Next up are: San Marino, Cyprus and Denmark!
