We knew there was something instantly special about the following threesome, even though we only heard 10 seconds of We Were Evergreen’s new single ‘Leeway’.
They’re fantastically witty, bring vibrant and positive melodies and they literally could brighten up any snowwy and heavy rain day here in the UK with their tracks. Yes they’re that bloody good.
So who are they exaclty? Michael Liot, Fabienne Debarre and William Serfass founded We Were Evergreen in their native France back in 2008 and decided to fuse a bit of English folk, disco beats, electronic-pop, and the storytelling traditions of their native France and give us some extraordinary songwriting skills and heavenly tunes. More of this please!
We should say it more often, but Vive La France!!!
Going on holiday? And wondering which tracks you might get bombarded with over the next fourteen days while you’re relaxing near the pool? Well don’t worry any longer, because GloPop is here to give you an overview of what’s currently topping the chart in five of Europe’s biggest music industries.
Spain: Cali & El Dandee feat. David Bisbal – No Hay 2 Sin 3 (Gol) (out Now!)
Alejandro Rengifo (Cali) and Mauricio Rengifo (Dandee), together Cali & Dandee, are a Colombian dance duo who have teamed up with Spain’s most popular singer David Bisbal for an uptempo summer dance anthem entitled ‘No Hay 2 Sin 3 (Gol)’. The song’s been in the Spanish chart for 9 weeks but has only managed to attain the number 1 this week. It’s the second number 1 single for the Colombian duo.
Germany: Lykke Li – I follow Rivers (Out now!)
Swedish songstress Lykke Li will be chuffed. Although her track ‘I follow Rivers’ has been out since 2008, it’s now nearly three four years later proving to be a massive hit at the continent. Belgium, the Netherlands and France have fallen for her mesmerizing indie-pop track last year, and now it’s Germany’s turn to welcome Lykke Li as their number one.
22 year old Brazilian pop singer Gusttavo Lima, has followed into the footsteps of country man Michel Teló and is currently conquering many European countries with his summer hit ‘Balada Boa (Tche Tche rere)’. Job done in Italy however, as the man’s steadily holding on to the number 1 position for six full weeks. The whole of Europe has fallen for Brazilian pop so be aware!
France: Carly Rae Jepsen – Call My Name (Out Now!)
Canadian superstar Carly Rae Jepsen, proves to be a strong contender for the end of year charts. Her global debut ‘Call Me Maybe’ has taken its number 1 position back in France after being number 1 for a week in June. The total amount of weeks on number 1 in France comes down to three weeks. Well done Carly!
United Kingdom: Maroon 5 – Payphone ft Wiz Khalifa (Out Now)
Things looked rather grim at first for Maroon 5 latest single ‘Payphone’ when a released cover of their track made it nearly to the top. However good news for the American guys, who managed to take the number 1 last week. Whether they can hold on for another week will be difficult. the Calvin Harris Remix of Florence+ The Machine’s track ‘Spectrum’ seems to be having the number 1 in the bag. We’ll find out tomorrow.
Huge day for Chris Brown, not only has his new album ‘Fortune’ been launched in the UK today, the official video for his collaboration track with Dj David Guetta and Lil’Wayne has found the day light.
The video, which is the scene of a virtual play world sees both Guetta and Brown in astronaut similar suits in space cocoons, while Lil’Wayne gets to play arround in a virtual skate park.
‘Let Me Imagine’ would have been a nice extra addition to Brown’s new cd as it fits perfectly in the ‘Fortune’ concept, yet for some strange reason the track doesn’t appear on the track list, possibly due to the fact that the track is produced by Guetta and features on his cd ‘Nothing But the Beat’. Brown is the latest addition of collaborators after Guetta has released tracks with Flo Rida, Taio Cruz, Sia, Nicki Minaj.
‘I can Only Imagine’ is out now via David Guetta’s album ‘Nothing But The Beat’.
Fed up with the main stream music albums? No need to worry here @ GloPop it’s not all about pop music. Occasionally GloPop will go into alternative mood, bringing you album reviews for those less main stream albums, you shouldn’t miss out on. Kicking off this week, is a trio of acts who couldn’t be more different from each other:
‘Chill Funk Trip’ by Made of Wood.
born and raised in Worcester, MA yet Albuquerque based Dan Waldman is a man of many talents. Not only is he an accomplished pianist and composer in a classical back ground, his incredible talent is reflected in the wonderful pieces of music he’s been creating for his ambient music project ‘Man of Wood’. The expertise of his classical background, combined with own samples (which are being altered constantly), a variety of sounds inspired by the idols ( Massive Attack, Air, Radiohead,..) a healthy doses of passion for music and lots of hard work have resulted in an outstanding down tempo debut album called ‘Chill Funk Trip’.
The album, a compilation of 11 exquisite funk tracks, is a fusion of instrumental lounge music with a twist. Expect a chilled atmosphere, of experimental sounds, caressing your ears with the soft sounds of electro instruments, jazz instruments like sax, piano twist interludes and a no talking policy. this is chill out at its best. Absolutely LUSH!!!
The album ‘Chill Funk Trip’ by Made of Wood is out on iTunes or any other online retailer and can be bought now.
‘Love blood’ by King Charles
Early last month we featured King Charles on our blog as one of the artists to watch out for in the alternative indie circuit. Looks like our suspicion was right. Even though ‘Lady Percy’ didn’t make the airplay to any of the radio stations, follow up single ‘The Brightest Lights’ feat. Mumford & Sons, is attracting lots of attention and is currently being picked up. What a joy, as this independent singer songwriter really deserves the big break through.
Charles’ debut album ‘Love Blood’ is an astonishing 11-track album with up tempo alternative music. With the summer and all its festivals in sight, this gentleman will leave an impressive impact thanks to the impressive amount of feel good songs. Hail King Charles! Apart from the new single, the album also includes ‘Lady Percy’ and previous singles ‘ Love Blood’ and ‘Bam Bam’.
The album ‘Love Blood’ by King Charles is out on iTunes in standard or deluxe edition. Available now or via other online retailers.
‘I U Need’ by Olga Kouklaki
Just as King Charles, Greek born Parisienne Olga Kouklaki found her way to GloPop a good month and a half ago when we reviewed her electronica track ‘I U need’. In the article, which we reviewed here, we mentioned how the singer explained her new album as more accessible and more appealing sounding. Currently ‘I U Need’ is one of our most favorite albums of 2012, simply because of the 11 electronica songs which flirt occasionally with the oh so wonderful sounds from the eighties.
‘I U Need’ is one hell of a diverse album, performed by a singer who’s incredible in expressing her emotions without ever going over the top or holding back. Olga Kouklaki is pure class and deserves without a shadow of a doubt, her title as ‘electro mermaid of the Mediterranean Sea’. If you are new to electronica music or a die hard fan, then this lady is all you need.
The album ‘I U Need’ is out via i-Tunes and any other online retailer now.
Why limit yourself to one talent if you have several things you’re good at? Indeed, French music video director, graphic designer, and musician Yoann Lemoine is not only the video director of stars as Katy Perry, Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift and French dance duo The Shoes but he’s also know as the alternative indie musician Woodkid.
The great thing about being a producer of your own music and translating your thoughts in amazing videos is that you can be as creative as you want. Proven to have a very creative mind, the singers debut EP and single ‘Iron’ featured as the theme song for the video game Assassins Cree: Revelations E3 last year and is currently used in a commercial on the UK channels for the new Peugeot 3008 Hybrid 4.
Now in 2012, the singer has his second EP ready, which is the predecessor for a full album ”The Golden Age”, which he hopes to release in September. ”Run Boy Run” is a full of beats and dreams, dark, revealing and refreshing at the same time. The video itself, idea and concept by the man himself, is produced in black and white and is a cross between every child’s fantasy of being brave and explore adventures and the story of Peter Pan. Absolutely astonishing.
With the likes of M83 currently doing rather sublime in the charts, Woodkid is the next French musician to watch out for.
‘Run Boy Run’ is now available via iTunes or Amazon.
Since 2008 the annual Eurovision Song Contest consists of two semi finalists which are responsible to deliver 10 qualifiers each to take part in the grand final where they join Italy, France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom and the host country, this year Azerbaijan. Over the past few weeks we’ve been going through the semi finalists. Today, one day before the rehearsals in Azerbaijan start we give our verdict on the six finalists.
United Kingdom: Engelbert Humperdinck – Love Will Set You Free
Flying the flag for the United Kingdom this year is world famous pop singer Engelbert Humperdinck. Engelbert was announced as the UK representative for Eurovision on March 1st by the BBC sparking quite a lot of mixed responses. But the 76 year old , who has a career spanning over 4 decades, promised us his song would be a treat. On March 19, ”Love Will Set You Free” got its radio premiere and since the reactions to the UK entry have been fairly positive. ”Love Will Set You Free” can be best described as a typical Engelbert Humperdinck style ballad, which has been given a Eurovision-friendly treatment. There’s no doubt his name will attract new audiences to the tv show on the saturday evening and who knows pick up quite a few votes. A top ten place is possible as it is a rather charming entry which also gives us a bit of a Mary Poppins feeling (Chim Chim Cheree anyone) also proving how the BBC are turning their back to their past of joke entries and adding credibility to the Eurovision Song contest.
France: Anggun – Echo (You and I)
Indonesian Francophone Anggun was internally selected to represent France at this year’s contest and takes her participation as a mission. The talented singer, which was happy to be interviewed by us a few weeks ago, wanted to spice things up a bit. And she definately has with her uptempo song ‘Echo (You and I)’. Anggun herself explained that the song is a bit of a grower, and we agree in first instance the song needs a few listens to be fully appreciated but at the same time it’s a new chapter for France, which hasn’t really gone uptempo pop in the past few years. Miss Anggun sells it well and has had a distinctive promo tour to sell the song. Definately one which we’ll continue to play after the contest.
Italy: Nina Zilla – L’Amore E Femmina (Out Of Love)
Italy returned to the contest last year and it’s comeback was hugely succesful with Raphael Guallazi claiming the runner up position in the final. Hoping to do better is Nina Zilla, who was announced as the Italian representative during the San Remo Festival this year. After making the tough decision to change her San Remo contribution ‘Per Sempre’, the talented singer, who looks very similar to Amy Winehouse btw, chose to rework one of the songs from her second album, ‘L’Amore E Femmina’, in a bilingual version and present that one as the official Italian entry. And good work for the Italians, we have to say because this entry ‘L’amore E Femmina’ does not only sound 60ies, it has a quirky James Bond feel and a singer who sells her song bloody well. No wonder it’s one of the big favourites for the crown title. Amazing!
Azerbaijan: Sabina Babayeva – When the Music Dies
Azerbaijan won last years Eurovision Song Contest crown and is defending its crown on home soil in Baku. Flying the flag and taken up the honor is Sabina Babayeva, one of the countries most talented singers. Sabina is not a stranger to the Eurovision song Contest as she’s been taking part in the national final ever since the country made its debut in 2008. ‘When the Music Dies’ is the Azerbaijani entry, it’s a Swedish composed ballad, which includes the duduk, which is a woodwind instrument, similar to the flute, giving the song a very ethnic feel. Sabina is a true diva in her country, and as it pleases divas she has a remarkable voice which would be stiff competition for someone like Toni Braxton. It’s a unique in that sense that there are lots of ballads but not a lot who have chosen for an ethnic approach so we think this could do rather well.
Spain: Pastora Soler – Quedate Conmigo (Stay with Me)
Spanish singer songwriter Pastora Soler, one of Spain’s biggest superstars in the flamenco and pop genre, was internally selected by its broadcaster to represent Spain at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. In a televised event, it was the viewers who initially decided the song Pastora would sing. They unanimously voted for the very Eurovisiony ballad ‘Quedate Conmigo’ which showcases the tremendous vocal capabilities of Miss Soler. In all honesty this one had to grow a bit on us, and reminded us during a first listen too much of those X Factor winner singles which really showcase the capabilities of the singer and immediately also drag the career of the singer down completely. Let’s hope things do go the right way for Pastora.
Germany: Roman Lob – Standing Still
Last, are the hosts of last year, Germany. After the success with Lena in 2010 and 2011, the German broadcaster decided to continue with the talent show concept of ‘Unser Star Fur …’ to decide it’s participant. Changing the title from ‘Unser Star Fur Oslo’ to ‘Unser Star Fur Baku’ the competition kicked off at the beginning of the year. Early in the competition one particular guy called Roman Lob stood out and yes Germany decided to send him to Baku with the Jamie Cullum composed radio ballad ‘Standing Still’. You can tell that Cullum’s behind the song as the piano is very prominent in the song. Again a very strong bid from Germany, who’s really raised the game in the past three years.
3 United Kingdom
All in all we have to say this year’s Eurovision is gonna be a hell of an exciting event. Tomorrow the rehearsal start in Baku, the host city. The first semi final is held on May 22nd, the second on May 24th and the grand final is on May 26. Throughout the week we’ll keep an eye on several blogs to follow the rehearsals in Baku, alongside the news and bring you all the latest gossips. Enjoy the Eurovision madness!
