Aftonbladet releases list of potential Melodifestivalen 2013 participants

The race for Melodifestivalen has begun. The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet published an article earlier in the week with names of artists who are said to be in talks to make an appearance during the Swedish selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest, Melodifestivalen. Amongst them are quite a few names who’ve been in Melodifestivalen before.

The Aftonbladet article is one of the most anticipated articles in the run up for SVT and has proven in the past few years to be quite accurate in its predictions. Over the past few weeks, a special jury has selected 16 of the 32 songs which will be performed during this years contest. Those were chosen from the total of 1902 submissions. Melodifestivalen director Christer Björkman will now choose the other 16 tracks. In the next coming week a list is expected of the tracks that have made the final cut.

But who’s going to perform those. When the list of songs and composers is made available we’ll be able to put some names with the songs but according to the Aftonbladet article we’re in for a few returnees from 2012 ; Mattias Andréasson, boy band Youngblood and the finalists Ulrik Munther, Sean Banan, David Lindgren and MF host Sarah Dawn Finer are all said to be in talks for a potential participation. Munther, in fact is said to be working together with the composer of ‘Euphoria’, the winning song of Melodifestivalen and the Eurovision Song Contest. The man, G:sson, is also responsible for many Swedish entries, including Carola’s ‘Evighet’ (Esc, 2006). Carola is in fact, alongside Helena Paparizou, a former Eurovision winner rumoured to take part, although she only recently revealed she has no more intention to take part in both festivals.

After the odd, but successful collaboration of Sara Li & writer Bjorn Ranelid this year, more unusual collaborations are to be expected. Linda Bengtzing, a Swedish schlager queen and rock star Nicke Borg are said to come up with a rock duet, while Fame Factory participant Sara Löfgren is said to partner up with Patrik Isaksson.

From the 32 spots, only one candidate is certain from taking part, being ‘Svensktoppen nästa’ winner Therese Fredenwall. The following list of artists are also rumoured to be in talks:

Amanda Fondell

”Håkan ”Nordman” Hemlin

Jessica Andersson (ESC ’03)

Jessica Folcker

Swingfly

Martin Rolinski (ex-BWO)

Eric Amarillo

Amy Diamond

Mimmi Sandén (Junior Eurovision and sister of Molly Sandén)

Cookies N Beans

Lasse Berghagen (as songwriter)

Tommy Körberg

Måns Zelmerlöw

Linnea Henriksson

Etzia i samarbete & Kapten Röd

Robin Stjernberg

Nina Söderquist.

As said, these are just potential artists who are considered to be in talks with the SVT producers. In due time, SVT, the Swedish broadcaster will announce the 32 participants for this years popular event. Melodifestivalen will choose the next representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, which is taking place this year in Malmo, Sweden after the broadcaster won the contest with ‘Euphoria’ by Loreen. It’s the new Loreen single(s).

With only a few weeks left before the worldwide release of  ‘Heal’, the debut studio album of Eurovision winner Loreen, the Swedish dance queen has found the time to announce her new worldwide single.

‘My Heart Is Refusing Me’ was the first single of the 2004 X Factor participant in Sweden last year. The song, was one of the hopefuls in Melodifestivalen, the contest Loreen won this year in order to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The original 3 minute track has now been revamped into a big euro dance track. Don’t let that put you off. It still has the Loreen mystique and is a lot more accessible for the international audience than the original version. There’s no long wait for the track as ‘My Heart is Refusing Me’ will be available from Monday October 8 onwards.

Sweden and Norway, are also being treated to a new single which is called ‘In My Head’, out tomorrow as well.
You can listen to a preview of the track, including the rest of Loreen’s forthcoming album ‘Heal’ by clicking on this link:

What do you think of the new Loreen single? Is it a good choice?

ESC 2013: Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Malmö

Only a few moments ago, the organizing Swedish broadcaster of the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 has confirmed their host city for the annual event; Malmö has won the bid over Stockholm to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013.

According to an article, published on the official website of Eurovision.tv, ‘ the decision about the host city was open till the very last minute’ and a very difficult one to make according to Martin Österdahl, who recently has been announced as the Executive Producer of the 2013 contest.

Explaining the reason behind their choice: “We chose Malmö because there is a very good infrastructure and we have good experience of holding Melodifestivalen [the Swedish national selection] and the Eurovision Song Contest there,” he explains. “The choice of Malmö is based on an overall assessment of the environment in which we think is best for the format of the Eurovision Song Contest, both in terms of TV shows and on the preparations.”

The three shows, will find their home at the Malmö Arena where international superstars like Britney Spears have performed on their world tour, and has hosted several sport competitions including 2011 World Men’s Handball Championship and 2011–12 Svenska Superligan finals. For Eurovision fans the arena is best known for its appearances and host location during one of the semi final heats of Melodifestivalen since 2009. The arena itself is in many ways similar to the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland where the Eurovision Song Contest was held in 200.

The mayor of Malmö is happy to see the contest return to his city and has announced to be ‘extremely proud and happy today’. Malmö has organized the contest once in 1992, after Carola won in Italy the year before. The city of Malmö is t he third largest city in Sweden and one of the largest ones in Scandinavia (664,000 people).

It was previously reported that the city of Malmö had undertaken action to receive an early response by SVT in regards to hosting the contest as freezing hotel rooms for the period, was having a negative impact on local business.

ESC 2013: The Latest Eurovision News from Sweden

The 2012 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest has only finished a month ago, yet news about the forthcoming edition in Sweden is already on its. Here’s a short story of what’s been going on in Eurovision land so far:

SVT, the winning Swedish broadcaster has announced its production team for the contest which is currently scheduled for 14, 16 and 18 May. The broadcaster has opted for an experienced team with Martin Österdahl as executive producer of the show. He will be joined by SVT Malmö head Christel Tholse Willers, who’ll take up the role as head of relations, Johan Bernhagen, Head of Production and Christer Björkman, the current Swedish delegation leader and executive producer of Swedish selection format ‘Melodifestivalen’. He will function as the show’s producer.

The broadcaster has also confirmed the return of its highly successful formula ‘Melodifestivalen’ which will continue to be used as their selection method. SVT has announced a few changes for this year: The web joker system, will not be used any longer, instead the winner of radio show ‘Svensktoppen Nästa 2012′ will be able to take part with a different song. 15 songs will be taken from two websites, where Swedish and foreign composers can upload their material from 3-17 September onwards. Newcomers can do so in the Public contest, while the established producers upload their tracks to the Regular Contest. The remaining 16 songs are to be  written or composed on request by SVT. To read the rules in English click here.

As usual, the composers and song titles are expected to be announced around October/November, while the announcement of performers is expected in December. The actual heats are expected to commence on February 2nd. The different cities to host the heats have not been confirmed yet apart from its final which is taking place on March 9th 2013 in the newly Friends Arena nearby Stockholm.

Stockholm is currently also one of the cities who has bid to host the Eurovision Song Contest, originally alongside Malmö and Gothenburg. The latter however has withdrawn its application. Despite the rumors that the Eurovision Song Contest could take a Melodifestivalen approach and have its two semi finals and final in three different cities, Björkman confirmed that their would only be one host city as, as logistics would be incredibly difficult in such a short time span. The bid is expected to be won, by Stockholm which has two venues with interest: Globen and the new Friends Arena (pictured).

Sweden won the Eurovision Song Contest on May 26 with ‘Euphoria’ by Loreen. Watch her winning performance below:

ESC 2012 – Those Who Didn’t Make It: Danny – Amazing

We’ve had six very exciting weeks, with the Swedish preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest. And last night, a winner was crowned out of the ten finalists.

Since the start of the week, it was clear there would be a battle between the runner up of last years Melodifestivalen Danny and Loreen, who also took part in last years contest with ‘My Heart Is Refusing Me’ but failing to reach the final in Andra Chansen.

But not this year, after all ten finalists had performed, the international jury of eleven countries including Belgium, Cyprus, Malta, Germany, France and the United Kingdom Loreen was on top followed by Danny and Molly Sanden.

After an interval act by Eurovision ’05 winner Elena Paparizou (”My Number 1”, Greece), who gave a ‘Chicago meets Pussycat Dolls’ rendition of last years Swedish entry ‘Popular’ , host Helena Bergstrom announced the results of the Swedish televoting. With 33% of the votes, Loreen was voted as the best act and therefore the Swedish representative in Baku in May, also breaking the curse of being in heat 1. Since the system of 4 heats and second chance have been introduced, none of the qualifiers from semi 1 have ever represented Sweden at Eurovision. Pre-contest favourite Danny, who gave a much better performance then he did 2 weeks ago, became for the second year in a row the runner up, bless him!

So that means we’ll see Loreen again in a few weeks time when we start our official countdown with all the selected Eurovision Song Contest participants. Watch this space. As for Danny, no doubt he’ll have a massive hit with ‘Amazing’ in Sweden and we are quite sure to see him back in Melodifestivalen at some point.  As for now, we’re all out’melodifestivalen’ed and would like to say ‘Sweden see you next year’ with Danny’s finale performance of ”Amazing’. Enjoy!

MF 2012 – Welcome to Globen part 4

It’s time for our final part in the Melodifestivalen 2012 adventure. We’re one day ahead of the big final in which Sweden selects its representative for the Eurovision Song Contest. Over the past week we have introduced you to 7 finalists. Today we are presenting you the last three being Björn Ranelid ft Sara Li, Molly Sandén & Danny Saucedo.

Björn Ranelid ft Sara Li – Mirakel

Controversial writer Björn Ranelid raised quite a few eyebrows when the man was announced as one of the participants taking part in this years Melodifestivalen. He assured the press however that he wouldn’t be singing the song ‘Mirakel’ himself but had teamed up with singer Sara Li. ”Mirakel” is an interesting song in that sense, that Ranelid speaks the verses, while Sara Li sings the chorus. And it all happens on a schlageristic dance beat. While many assumed this would be bottom of the heat in Leksand, the duo were the second act to be told they were directly qualified for the final. When we heard the song the first time, we honestly had a ‘What the hell’ moment but, after a second listen we had to admit we actually quite like this, because it is totally unexpected and refreshing.

Our Verdict: We understand that Melodifestivalen is breaking away from the tradition of bringing pure schlager music, and we’re really happy to see the music genres being explored in the contest. ”Mirakel” is definately final worthy and both Ranelid and his young blonde lady will have a hit with it but we think this is probably too alternative for the Swedish to send to the Eurovision Song Contest in Baku. The fear might be mainly that other countries might not see this as a genius act but as a novelty act taking the mickey out of the contest. A nice attempt of Ranelid though.

Molly Sandén – Why Am I crying

Molly Sandén, Sweden’s very first representative in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2003 is returning to the Melodifestivalen circus for the second time with the only real proper ballad in the finalists field. ”Why Am I Crying” co-written by the singer alongside Aleena Gibson & Windy Wagner resembles a very similar style of songs Kelly Clarkson sings these days. It’s a contemporary ballad, and not the most Melodifestivalen-like ballad we have seen in the past. It’s a big step up for Molly since her 2009 attempt Så vill stjärnorna which failed to receive any votes in the grand final. She’s more mature now, and is growing into a confident performer. We can’t help but hear some Sinead O’Connor in the chorus too, which makes us love it even more.

Our Verdict: As the only real proper ballad in the finalist field, Molly shouldn’t be ruled out of dominating the scorefield, especially with the high level of club tracks taking part in the final. ”Why Am I crying” would deserve the ticket for Baku, simply because it is a very modern day sounding ballad, which is very comparable to the likes of Kelly Clarkson. She’s grown a lot in her style of songs, brings her song beautifully and has the experience of having taken part in a similar competition as a youngster during Junior Eurovision. Not to mention perhaps the hopes of some to see Eric Saade, the winner of last years Melodifestivalen and Swedish representative handing over the trophy to his ex-girlfriend. (Akward!)

Danny Saucedo – Amazing

And our last finalist and pre-contest favourite Danny. Danny Saucedo is no stranger to the Melodifestivalen festival. In 2009 he took part as 1/3 of EMD and was the runner up in last year’s edition with ‘In The Club’ just missing out. Very early since the start of the competition he’s been bombarded as the big favourite to win this year, possibly as well fuelled by the own remarks that he had found the perfect song which would blow everybody’s socks off.  And well ”Amazing” written by Peter Boström, Figge Boström & Danny himself is possibly the only song in the field which sounds the most radiofriendly. There’s dubstep involved, an easy to sing along chorus, very dancey, very moveable. And let’s be honest, Danny is nice to look at to.

Our Verdict: How much we would like to believe ”Amazing” is ‘amazing’ we feel it’s become a victim of expectations really. Yes it sounds very contamporary but it is not as good as Danny’s previous attempt. The act looks wicked but really takes the emphasis away from the singing. During the performances two weeks ago, Danny was struggling and we wouldn’t mind seeing it in Baku at all, but we think there are better candidates at this time which could really do Sweden proud. Our advice for Danny would be to take a break from Melodifestivalen for a year and come back bigger and stronger. Eventually he will make it, but most likely not this year.

The Overall verdict

Wauw what a brilliant Melodifestivalen year its been, and soon it will be over again. Booo! Once again Sweden has proven to offer a high standard musical competition which should be an inspiration for other countries. It’s not just about selecting a Eurovision entry but clearing the way for different music genres within a particular country. Tomorrow evening the 10 best songs of 5 weeks of Swedish music are battling it out to be crowned winner and get on top of that to represent their country. All we still need to do is give a little prognose for tomorrow. Our top three being:

1. Loreen

2. Thorsten Flinck & RevolutionsOrkestern

3. Molly Sandén

The final of Melodifestivalen can be seen live tomorrow at 8PM CET on http://svt.se/melodifestivalen. The competition, held in Globen, Stockholm will see the national juries voting alongside an international jury of 10 countries. Both are responsible for 50%

The winner of the combined voting will be crowned this years winner and will also represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, Azerbaijan.
