ESC13: Those Who Didn’t Make It: Ukraine’s Tatyana Shirko

ESC2013_butterfly_white_sloganIt’s hard to imagine that almost a month ago, the Eurovision Season had well and truly kicked off. Always a fan favourite, well in our household anyway, are the lovely chaps and chappettes of Ukraine, who in all honesty aren’t shy for a little bit of controversy in their national finals.

But not this year, as 20 candidates took part in the national final, which was eventually won by Zlata. Never mind Zlata, we’ll see her with ‘Gravity’ in a few months time but more intriguing we thought was this little charmer; Her name Tatyana Shirko. Do we know much about her? No not really, apart from the fact that she has an incredible voice and a happy chappy clappy sing along song; ‘Feeling Like A Sir’ finished in a respectable third place in the national final, which is good, but also dissapointing considering it would have been a definate ‘douze points’ from us. Suddenly that butterfly doesn’t look that bad anymore at all.

ESC 2012 Review – Part 10: Portugal & Ukraine

Since 2008 the annual Eurovision Song Contest consists of two semi finalists which are responsible to deliver 10 qualifiers each to take part in the grand final where they join Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the host country, this year Azerbaijan. Over the past few weeks we’ve been going through the semi finalists. Today we have a closer look at the entries from Portugal & Ukraine.

Portugal: Filipa Sousa – Vida Minha

Portugal was one of the last countries to selects its representative for Baku this year. The country is one of the few left in the competition who’s scoreboard consists of lower rankings, than high flyers. This year Portugal decided to choose the singer Filipa Sousa to represent the country with a typical Portuguese ballad ‘Vida Minha’. From the participating field, it’s definately not the worst. The appeal in its song is definately the Mediterranean influences, and the backing vocals who give the song that little extra. Filipa herself is a great singer as well, and her voice suits the song very well. The trouble with Portugal year in year out is that they either take the contest too light hearted or too dead serious, so despite their good efforts, this is such a serious ballad which we assume, is going to be left aside and will yet again fail to qualify.

Ukraine: Gaitana – Be My Guest

Be prepared to be wowed. Think 90ies, in a mix with EuroFifa Football…. and that’s the Ukrainian Eurovision entry, and what a very clever choice. Gaitana won back in February the Ukrainian preselection with her song ‘Be My Guest’. The song reminds me very much of the modern club music, where dj’s ask black female singers, with outstanding voices to do the vocals. It’s also very nineties, think Robyn S ‘’Show Me Love’’ e.g. and Yes, football anthems and Eurovision have been done before, but with the track record Ukraine has achieved in Eurovision, this is truly one of the few entries which is sailing through without any doubt to the final and is most likely going to dominate the scoreboard on May 26th. Kiev 2013? It is a possibility. Ukraine has won the contest once before in 2004 and came close to victory in 2007 and 2008 finishing in second place.

Our Verdict:

1 Ukraine

2 Netherlands

3 FYR Macedonia

4 Serbia

5 Malta

6 Belarus

7 Portugal

Coming up next are: Bulgaria, Slovenia and Croatia

Ukrainian Max releases new song ‘F***k off’

A few weeks ago, we introduced you to Max Barskih in our ESC 2012 – Those Who Didn’t Make it series. The young delicious looking man unfortunately didn’t make it to Eurovision with ‘Dance’ .

In order to forget about the attempt he has now released his second single ‘F**k off’. As ‘Dance’ it’s a very clubby sounding track, sounding a bit horror-like and contains strong lyrics ” I can be a rockstar, I can be a fuck star… If you don’t like f**k off … I’ll kill you with my heels” It’s a very anthemic song as well, which becomes more clear during the second part of the verses in which the aim is being explained by Max as he mentions how everyone should treat all types of peoples as equals and chants throughout ‘we’re all children of the universe’ so he does make a point.

‘F**k off’ is also part of the 1-hour horror musical which Max has been filming. You can tell because it’s got a very horror sound to it. In order not to alarm everybody with the film we have posted just the song underneath but also for those who would like to see part of the 1 hour horror musical the scene in which Max performs both Dance and F**k off.

”F**k Off’ by Max Barskih studio version

”Dance” & ”F**k Off” as part of the 1-hour horror musical

Both ‘Dance’ and ‘F**ck off” can be bought via iTunes.

ESC 2012 – Those who didn’t Make It: Max

It’s been a busy weekend in Eurovision land this weekend. With one month to go before all entries have to be submitted at the official delegation meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan lots of countries are presenting or selecting their songs.

Yesterday morning, 22 participants took part in the national final in Ukraine. The country who usually ends up with singers who bribed televotes, or come up with illegible songs, managed to choose their final singer and song to big suprise of the many fans. However there is always some controversy going on, as with the runner up there:

Max originally took part in the preselection and was declined for the final because his act was to gruesome according to the jury. The bloke was utterly dissapointed and after it emerged Say.tv would held an online voting competition to give the winner the final spot, he didn’t hesitate to enter and won his place.

‘Dance’ is a clubby, dance song which probably would have done quite well in the nineties, if it was sung by a famous act. Despite all the effort Max went through he became the runner up for the contest. Oh well there is always Russia next year.
