Yes you read it right. Lys Assia, the first ever winner of the Eurovision Song Contest is back to give the contest another try. The Swiss singer won the contest in 1956 with her track ‘Refrain’, making Switzerland the very first country to win the annual European festival.
Despite having won, and returning a few years later, where she finished in a respectable eight place (something which isn’t always guaranteed… look at Dana International and Charlotte Perelli) the 88 year old singer is not planning on leaving the contest behind that easily.
Although she returned to the Swiss final last year, with a nostalgic ballad ‘C’Etait Ma Vie’, co-written with Ralph Siegel, the singer didn’t win the ticket to Baku as the Swiss representative. This year she hopes to attract votes from the younger audience by teaming up with rappers ensemble New Jack, transforming herself into a trendy hip hop babe and thus hoping to make it to the televised event, later in the year to pack their bags for an appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Malmo, Sweden in May. A preview of the track can be heard here, and as usual the typical Siegel lyrics are not that far off (‘Hello, How Is The Flow’ … no we are not joking)…
This will be an interesting one for sure. The Swiss entrant for Eurovision 2013 will be selected by ‘Die Grosse Engscheidungs Show’ at Kreuzlingen on 15 December 2012. Apart from Lys Assia, German idol finalist Jesse Ritch and the winner of the local ‘Switzerland Got Talent’, Maya Wirz, have expressed interest in taking part in the selection.
We’re being treated to a lot of Descending from the Godly Musician mountain Olympos the past few months. With the Elton vs Pnau project full on, George Michael’s return to the music industry (which we’ll feature soon) that other delicious 9oies electro pop phenomenon is back in town: The Pet Shop Boys.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, rose to fame in the early 8oies and have since built an amazing repertoire of electronic poppy dance tunes, with several number 1 hits and success in the eighties, nineties and nillies. To this date, the band have released ten albums, and many compilation and live albums.
Yet studio album number 11 is under its way, the album which is called ‘Elysium’ succeeds 2009 album Yes and will be released September 19. The first single taken from the new album is the chilled out, yet very strong anthemic sounding ‘Winners’. ”you’re a winner I’m a winner, let’s enjoy it while it last” is part of the chorus, sung by Neil Tennant. The whole track in fact is about surviving showing determination and not ever giving up. Reason enough to believe, the track sounds as if its been written with the Olympic idea in mind. Don’t get us wrong, we think the Muse track is a brilliant one, yet we wonder when the footage of winners at the end of the Olympics will be shown in broadcaster, will be played with this new track by the Pet Shop Boys.
Hail to the great Gods of Music! While its still a little while before the album drops, the single ‘Winner’ will be released digitally tomorrow, and a physical release is to follow on August 6.
Loreen, the winner of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, has made her first international appearance this morning on the BBC Breakfast show.
The singer who represented Sweden and won with a landslide, 372 points exactly, flew in from Stockholm at 4 o’clock this morning to start a mini promo tour. The singer is currently number 1 in 14 countries, and top three in the United Kingdom, France according to iTunes. Especially in the UK, the expectations are high for the singer as she is expected to enter high in the top ten on Sunday and get airplay on several radio stations. One thing’s for sure, Loreen is bound to become a huge lady internationally.
In the interview, which you can find below, Loreen talks about preparing for her performance, Engelbert Humperdinck, tips for the UK(Really????), The Russian grannies, snow and taking a break.
Last night the 57 annual Eurovision Song Contest came to an end with its final, held in the host city of Baku, Azerbaijan. The bookmaker’s favorite, Sweden, didn’t dissapoint and took the crown with a giant leap over the grannies from Russia and the Balkan ballad from Serbia.
”Euphoria”, the winning entry of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest is performed by Swedish Loreen. The singer started a music career by appearing on the Swedish version of Idol in 2004, but rose to fame after her participation during last year’s Melodifestivalen, the Swedish preselection for Eurovision with the song ‘My Heart is Refusing Me’. Despite being a huge favorite to make it to the final, her adventure stopped during Andra Chansen where she lost out.
Her debut in Melodifestivalen increased Loreen’s popularity and a desired act to come back to the competition hence why she was approached for this year’s competition by Christer Bjorkman, delegation leader of SVT and executive producer for the Swedish preselections to give it another go. On March 13, Loreen won Melodifestivalen, with the highest record of votes in the selection’s history and now she’s done the same at the Eurovision Song Contest with a Swedish victory as end result.
The single is currently on its way to the top of several European charts, and seems to become one of the biggest hits the contest has produced in the recent years. Be ready to have ”Euphoria” blasted out of your radio’s this summer. An album of the Swedish songstress is expected late 2012.
